News broke this morning of an East Penn truck accident further up Rt. 222 from Maidencreek Township, impacting our friends and neighbors in Maxatawny:
A commercial vehicle crash leaked batteries onto Route 222, causing the road to be closed Friday morning. The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. near Valentino’s of Kutztown in Maxatawny Township, Berks County.
According to a 69 News freelancer at the scene, a Penn Manufacturing truck rear-ended another commercial vehicle, causing the latter’s load of batteries to shift and leak.
This caused Route 222 to be closed Long Lane and the Kutztown Exit, according to the Fire Alerts of Berks County Facebook page.
No injuries were reported, and the trailer was pulled away safely after hazmat (hazardous materials) crews secured the leak and washed the roadway.

We’re grateful nobody was hurt in this incident, but it shows the dangers associated with accidents involving batteries. Especially as, we presume, the proposed million-square-foot warehouse would be used to store, ship and transport a LOT of batteries.
Some visuals, too:

Are we still OK with this in our backyards? What would such leaks and/or damage do to our neighborhood…
